Defendant Sentenced on Carjacking, Firearm Charges
MOBILE, AL—A federal judge in Mobile sentenced a Mobile man to just over 18
years in prison after the defendant had earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of carjacking and
a charge of use of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence, Acting United
States Attorney Eugene A. Seidel of the Southern District of Alabama announced today.
Absalom DeCarlos Lucky, 24, pleaded guilty to the charges in December 2008, and faced
a statutory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison on the firearm charge. The charges
arose when Lucky accosted a female victim at a convenience store on Dauphin Island
Parkway on May 18, 2008, shot the woman in the chest, then drove off in the victim’s
truck. A 911 call alerted a nearby police officer, who gave chase on the north end of
Dauphin Island Parkway. The chase ended when Lucky lost control of, and wrecked the
victim’s truck near Bishop State. In handing down the prison sentence, District Judge
Kristi Dubose made note of the severe injuries suffered by the victim.
The charges resulted from investigations conducted by the Mobile Police Department
and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United
States Attorney John Cherry.
