Corrections Officer Pleads Guilty to Bribery
MOBILE, AL—A 19-year-old resident of Selma, Alabama, Tahshaye Tesfmichael Canty-Neely, entered a guilty plea to bribery this morning in federal court. Canty-Neely is one of three corrections officers formerly employed by the Perry County Correctional Center in Uniontown, indicted in federal court on charges of smuggling prison contraband, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, and bribery. Court documents reflect that Canty-Neely was implicated in a scheme in which certain corrections officers would supply cell phones, marijuana and other contraband to federal inmates housed at the Perry County facility. Canty-Neely was caught in January of 2009 attempting to bring marijuana and a cell phone charger into the facility. He faces a sentence of up to 15 years in prison, followed by a supervised release term of five years. Judge Kristi Dubose set the sentencing for October 15, 2009.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Marshals Service. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Gloria Bedwell.
