The
FBI established a field office in Mobile, Alabama on January 13, 1947.
All investigative matters in the State prior to the establishment of the
Mobile Field Office were handled by the Birmingham Field Office. Since
that time, the Field Office has established five Resident Agencies,
currently located in Dothan, Monroeville, Montgomery, Opelika and
Selma. This structure facilitates Mobile's coverage of the 36 counties
that comprise the Middle and Southern Federal Judicial Districts for
which Mobile has investigative jurisdiction. The first Mobile Field Office was located on the fifth floor of the old Federal Court and Customs House. This was the Mobile Field Office's home for 40 years. It began with only 18 Special Agents and 12 support personnel. The only equipment they had to begin operations with was borrowed from the Miami and Birmingham Field Offices. The area of investigative responsibility upon establishment was the southern portion of Alabama and all of the Florida panhandle as far east as Jacksonville. On the Mobile Field Office's 40th anniversary the FBI moved into a new building at One St. Louis Centre. This building is located directly across the parking lot from our new location toward the south. In December 2001, the Mobile Field Office moved to its current location at 200 North Royal Street. The Mobile Field Office is the second smallest field office in the FBI, but its responsibilities encompass all the duties of any other FBI field office. Today, over 100 special agent and support personnel are assigned to the Mobile Field Office. |
