Programs in the FBI-Mobile Community Outreach Program (COP) assist socioeconomic ally disadvantaged students in improving academically, and in developing into good citizens. FBI-Mobile participates in the Adopt-A-School program and the adopted school is Eichold-Mertz Elementary School. The Community Outreach Specialist makes bi-weekly presentations to the fifth grade class, also part of the Junior Agent program, on issues including but not limited to drugs, education, peer pressure, and decision-making. Mobile’s Community Outreach Specialist also addresses students at area middle and high schools, churches, and civic and social organizations regarding those same subjects. FBI-Mobile has several partnerships in which it participates. One partnership with the Drug Education Council has resulted in annual participation in the Success Through Arts Recreation and Sports (STARS) Program. STARS is a summer program for over 250 “at-risk” youth between the ages of 10 and 17. Mobile adopts two teams (FBI and Task Force) to compete, academically and athletically, against teams adopted by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. Since 1990, the FBI has publicly recognized the achievements of individuals/organizations within the area of drug and/or violence education/prevention by presenting them with the Director’s Community Leadership Award. The latest recipient was Dr. Robert Norton, Auburn University professor, for his work regarding bio-terrorism. Dr. Norton, in his position at the university, has earned the reputation of being the expert in bio-terrorism for the FBI and USDA. Dr. Norton has been an active participant in the Weapons of Mass Destruction Program for several years. Dr. Norton is an active member of the Mobile Division’s INFRAGARD program. This program has received praise both locally and nationally, and has been considered instrumental in the United States fight against terrorism as his information assists in the protection of the United State’s food supply. FBI-Mobile also participates heavily with Red Ribbon Week commemorations, the anti-drug celebration remembering fallen DEA Agent Kiki Camerena, and the Combined Federal Campaign, is the only authorized solicitation of employees in the Federal workplace on behalf of charitable organizations. |
